I have to say that the PV/Appy rivalry has got to be one of the strongest ones in the state of VA. The one year I played football at PV, we played in a mud bowl at Appy. It had to have been one of the most memorable experiences from my days as a high school athlete. I wish I could be there and I hope that all that do go have a wonderful time and that the game is the best one this year. Good luck to both teams...and better luck to the Vikings!

Over the past twenty years, no other SWVA highschool football matchup exceeds Powell Valley vs Appalachia.

I consider the 1997 game the greatest in the rivalry and one of the greatest HS football games ever in SWVA.

Although the 2006 teams are not on par with the '97 Dogs and Vikes, it will be a good contest. The Vikings have not played with a high degree of intensity nor to the level of their talent, while the Bulldogs have gotten a lot out of their players. On paper, the Vikings should win, but the game will be played on the field.

Im picking Powell Valley 35-28.

I think it took a 10 year hiatus, not much was determined by the game since 97, the emotions have been there but its been upstaged by PV/GC and Appy/Burton. It has seemed to come full circle now however. I often am afraid that the true biterness between the two has gone away, its still PV/Appy, but its been so long, does it still matter to the players as it does those in the stands? We shall see, I think the bitterness will be back after this game though, I think people are letting them know again, they should be. Most of em dont realize those scores painted on the rain tressels and under passes of Big Stone Gap and Appalachia, the lunchtime talk of guys who once played in that game now stand beside one another in those mines, saw mills and work sites throughout the county now.

As awful as I think PV is I think they come out and embarrass Appy! PV stinks but Appy is even worse! Appy will not know what hit them!

Like Clayman said. You have to play in this game to understand it.
I hope those playing in it Friday night do. It's more than just your usual highschool game. It's about memories and memories with friends.
We use to beat each other to death during that game. But a week or so when it was over. We were all back to being friends.
Come August all that ended until the second week in November.
Because the first week or Friday in November was Appy and PV.
Can't really describe it. You have to have actually played in one of the games to understand it.
So i guess it's like CW and Burtons' rivalry or CW and Haysi.
